Fujitsu approached us here at Affari with the challenge of engaging with their Utility and Manufacturing based audience in a cost-effective and visually appealing manner. We worked with Fujitsu to turn their messaging around high-risk working environments and their Health & Safety implications into a script for a simple but stylish 2D explainer animation. We then developed a series of characters and scenes that saw Fujitsu’s Enterprise Wearables in the working environments and scenarios where the products would be used. We also created the voiceovers and on-screen subtitles to ensure accessibility. The end-result was a thought-provoking explainer animation that conveyed the offering in a succinct and compelling manner.

Process: Concept development (styleframes), storyboarding, script and voice over.
The pre-production process for this project began with the team researching and developing style frames that would eventually inform the overall look of the animation. Various character visuals were considered until we finally agreed on a minimal, angular character design which could be both emotive, and easily adaptable. Once the client had approved the script we progressed to the storyboarding stage. After assessing the content, we decided to implement a certain degree of humor into the scenes as we believed that this would work well to contrast the overly serious approach that health and safety videos often aim for. A challenging balance to achieve however we are very pleased with the results.

Process: Cameras, rigging, and rendering.
Once we’d received sign off on the styleframes and storyboard we began by creating bespoke illustrations from scratch including detailed character development and creative environment designs. These were then imported into After Effects ready for animation. We rigged all of our characters using the software RubberHose to enable full control over the character which enhanced the motion and offered new opportunities to explore humour.

Process: Editing (video & audio), compositing, colour grading.
A request from the client was to ensure the animation could be followed even without voiceover. So the team incorporated title frames between each section to give context to the scenes before they begin. Another request was for the animation to be completely seamless. Meaning we had to avoid using a single visible cut throughout, resulting in a completely seamless, free-flowing animation. We achieved this through the use of clever transitions and the manipulation of foreground objects to mask the areas where scenes meet.
