Valtech came to us with a need to communicate to NHS stakeholders on how their capabilities could help to achieve the NHS’s ‘5 year forward view’. The messaging for this was focused on the theme of innovation and majored on how much of an innovative institution the NHS is, encouraging them to see digital as another step in their long journey of innovation! To convey this complex subject matter, we delivered the content in the form of a visually striking 2D animation, developing the script and voiceover alongside graphics that were reflective of both the past, present and future NHS environments, all pulled together in a timeline with memorable and engaging text call-outs highlighting key figures and messages.

Process: Concept development (style frames), storyboarding, script and voice over.
At first, we collectively came together to produce a strong visual concept for Valtech UK. After our initial ideas were conceived, we created a series of high-quality style frames to visualise the final outcome. After the style frames were approved, a hand-drawn digital storyboard was created to dictate the narrative of the animation.

Process: Cameras, rigging, and rendering.
The team first had to source the images that would be used in the scenes, no easy task due to the exclusivity and volume of images we required. The photography was then edited in photoshop to the style frame specifications. As this was a seamless animation, a consideration during the motion stage was the transitions between different scenes that were split between the team. We resolved this issue by defining the start and end frames of scenes early on in the process. The main visual motif of the Valtech NHS animation was a glitch effect which was applied to many of the graphic elements to visualise the technological subject of the script.

Process: Editing (video & audio), compositing, colour grading.
The team worked very closely to ensure seamless transitions were made throughout the animation. This meant that the editing stage was less pressured as all edits had been accounted for in the storyboarding and production stages. Each rendered section simply stitched together without the need of lengthy and unnecessary editing. We employed a fast cut editing style in the intro and outro and once the animation had been rendered, we continued to use this style of editing throughout to enhance certain sections that lacked in pace.
