NTU Creative Spark
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) commissioned Affari to curate a clear, comprehensive and engaging online course for training students, graduates, and entrepreneurs in the art of creative and digital business. The course guides the user through all aspects of building a business, from mission statements and marketing to legal and financial considerations.
Nurturing Innovation
Our team worked closely with NTU to workshop the overall look and feel of the educational experience, applying the university branding throughout, and devoting considerable time to ensuring the needs of all potential users were met. Every module has a short piece to camera video introduction. We hand-picked an eloquent presenter, who was selected to set up each module coherently and concisely.
The later modules in particular require users to grasp crucial and quite complex legal and economic concepts and business skills. Modules covering intellectual property and accounting, for example, had to be meticulously devised to model good practice and steer start-ups to work within the confines of the law. Consequently, certain modules are more comprehensive than others and this necessitated more detail from graphics and video to support learning.

The course is practical, versatile, and straightforward, and it aims to determine whether a business idea is truly viable. There are different types of modules and elements for learning depending on the subject matter. The content comes in a range of formats, including videos, interactive self-guided tasks, direction towards further learning, and mini quizzes throughout.
Users have the opportunity to undertake the course at their own pace, recording their progress as they go. Students and educators can track levels of confidence before and after engaging with the content, and overall the experience produces useful analytics about students and start-up enterprises for NTU.

The British Council designed a five year initiative (2018-2023) to support the creative enterprise sector, and allocated funding to develop business skills for students and young entrepreneurs in Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. That’s where we came in!
Their Creative Spark: Higher Education Enterprise Programme formed 50 partnerships between universities and creative institutes in the UK with institutions in other countries. One of these partnerships is between our client NTU and Yerevan State University in Armenia. The relationship aims to strengthen and consolidate legal education and research, and to consult on curriculum development to more effectively tackle corruption and violations of human rights internationally.
Collating information specific to Armenian law was therefore essential to the success of this project. Armenian law with regards to entrepreneurship, taxation, and intellectual property is explained alongside UK law, and external links to more information are included for the benefit of Armenian users throughout the course. Our Creative Spark course has been developed to work for educational institutions as both an internal and external resource, and has been applied for use on a global scale.

A core consideration with this project has been optimised engagement and information retention in the age of remote learning, and so the course is designed to be as functional and navigable as possible.
