Pre-Production

We held a productive workshop with the client, where we gained valuable insight into their brand and the requirements for the animation. After exploring various styles, a clean visual language was created through style frames, focusing on simplicity, stability, and appealing to a mature target audience. Text placement, clean overlays and the treatment of imagery were all carefully considered at this stage.

We took inspiration from the compass icon within the Wren Sterling logo, often utilised by the brand for a navigational theme. With the style frames approved, we moved onto the storyboarding stage and developed the narrative. The keyframes were designed to represent the key message within the script and to visualise our ideas intuitively for our client.

As the animation is driven by photography, we curated a strong image bank that we felt would resonate with the target audience and reflect the brand’s already existing visual identity.

Production

With photography playing such an integral role in the production, we spent the time to highlight the human presence within each visual. We transformed the flat 2D imagery into 3D by isolating the foreground and background elements within each shot. This enabled us to parallax the imagery and create a sense of 3D depth and intrigue.

The client requested a smooth pace throughout the video, meaning transitions would be used sparingly, and adhere to our visual motif established in the style frames. The navigational theme present in the Wren Sterling brand heavily influenced our approach, enhancing the emotions of trust and stability within the animation.

I commissioned Affari to produce Wren Sterling’s first corporate video because I was impressed with their portfolio and range of video projects. The team quickly got to grips with how we wanted to position our brand, which is to create a sense of familiarity for the viewer with the video’s images, pace, music and key messages in the script. I was able to rely on Jake and the team to give me sensible feedback on my ideas based on their years of experience, so we produced a 90 second piece that dovetailed with our existing brand guidelines while also feeling like a fresh production. I’ll be using it on our website and social channels and it gives me a platform to create a library of similar videos in the same style in the future.
